Bruce C. Forbes is Professor of Global Change at Arctic Centre, University of Lapland, Finland. With a background in applied ecology and geography, his emphasis is on coupled human-environment systems in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions and resilience at various spatial and temporal scales. His research employs both western and traditional ecological knowledge in cooperation with indigenous reindeer herders. For two decades he has conducted participatory fieldwork among the Yamal Nenets of West Siberia and the Sami of northernmost Fennoscandia. Topics have encompassed combined social and ecological responses to rapid changes in land use, land cover and climate. His most recent findings highlight the value of deciduous tundra shrubs as proxy measures of summer climate over the past half-century.
